IVF (In vitro fertilisation) is a series of complex procedures that are used to help with infertility problems and help couples to have a child. In this process, matured eggs are collected from females, and are fertilised with sperms in a lab. Then, the fertilised eggs are transferred to the uterus.
IVF procedure is not done in a single day. It includes a series of complex procedures. Usually, a complete cycle of this procedure takes around 6 to 7 weeks. In a few cases, the steps may be split and the IVF process can take longer based on the circumstances of each patient.
Time Taken for an IVF Cycle
The time taken for an IVF process can be different from one person to another. Before initiating the procedure, the doctor wants to ensure that you are healthier to conceive. For this, a medical evaluation is performed to determine the genetic carrier screening risks along with blood sugar. If there are some medical conditions, they need to be altered to optimise future pregnancy. Each case of IVF treatment requires a specialised approach to treatment. Though each cycle of IVF is different, usually it takes 2 to 6 weeks.
From the second week, the preparation for IVF begins. Common pre-IVF tests such as ultrasounds, uterine evaluation are conducted to know about your fertility. The next step is to take birth control pills to regulate your menstrual cycle and prepare your ovaries. You need to take the medical pills for 2 to 4 weeks based on the length of your cycle.
After the cycle of taking medical pills, a process called Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation (COH) will be conducted to check your ovaries and uterus. During the COH process, fertilisation medications are used to restore the follicles in the ovaries so that more eggs will be matured. Then, blood tests and ultrasound are used to track the development of follicles and eggs. This process requires around 5 to 7 hospital visits.
10 to 15 days after completing the fertilisation medications, and after the monitoring has proven that follicles have grown to proper, the actual maturation of eggs takes place. The matured eggs will then be collected after 36 hours. If everything works well, fertilisation takes place and embryos will be created.
After fertilisation takes place, experts will monitor on a daily basis to determine which embryos have the best chances of a transfer. Once the fertilisation occurs, the embryos are ready to transfer after 3 days. The embryo is inserted into the uterus through the opening of the cervix. This procedure is painless, but a few women can experience cramps.
After the transfer is successful, you need to take progesterone medication to help the uterus lining and support implantation. It is important to be aware of the time taken for IVF from the start to finish to make the journey of IVF comfortable.
