Parenthood gives immense happiness and it cannot be replaced with anything else in this world. Every couple wishes to have a child and every couple in this world is not lucky enough to have a child naturally. There could be several reasons for not being able to have children.
With the advancement in technology, various options have been developed to have children such as IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and surrogacy. These treatments can help the couple to have a baby. But, many couples are confused while choosing between IVF and surrogacy.
Let us understand the difference between these methods.
IVF Procedure
IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization, which means fertilization takes place inside a glass tube. IVF takes several months to complete the procedure. It depends on the type of body. For a few people, it works in the first attempt, whereas in a few cases it is done more than once.
The IVF procedure starts with hormone therapy on the female’s body. Hormone therapy is used to enhance the development of eggs in her ovary. The infertile woman is kept under observation with proper medication until she produces matured eggs. Using a simple procedure, eggs are removed and are combined with the male sperms inside a lab. The eggs and sperms will be kept in a special container in the lab. Meanwhile, the inner lining of the woman’s womb will be prepared by hormone replacement therapy to handle pregnancy.
After careful observation, one or two good embryos or fertilized eggs will be transferred to the woman’s fallopian tube using the “embryo transfer process”. If the procedure is done properly and the fallopian tube gets attached to embryos, pregnancy takes place. This process is complicated and it is emotional for both partners.
Surrogacy Procedure
In a surrogacy procedure, the infertile couple hires a surrogate mother. The surrogate woman carries the baby in her womb as the original mother cannot carry the baby in her womb. Initially, the body of the surrogate mother may not allow carrying a baby in her womb, but it can be handled through proper medication.
The eggs are then taken from the original mother at a right time and are implanted into the womb of a surrogate with father sperms. If the male partner is infertile, the sperms will be taken from a sperm donor to handle the surrogacy process. The surrogate mother carries the baby in her womb and agrees to give the child to the actual parents after delivery. The baby will be genetically the child of the original parents. But, the surrogate mother carries and delivers the baby.
Surrogacy is being opted when a female uterus got removed due to some underlying medical condition. It is also opted even when a woman has a uterus defect. Couples also opt for surrogacy when the woman experiences multiple miscarriages. Surrogacy is an emotional journey and both partners should be emotionally and mentally prepared for the procedure.
Basic Difference Between IVF and Surrogacy
The main difference between IVF and Surrogacy is that the egg is fertilized outside the body in IVF, whereas in surrogacy, the fertilized eggs are implanted into the womb of the surrogate and she carries the baby for nine months. Both IVF and surrogacy procedures are used to bring smiles on the faces of infertile couples.
There are so many fertility centres and they can help you choose the right treatment by analysing your problems. So, before deciding between surrogacy and IVF, consult a gynaecologist to choose the right option suitable for you. There is nothing wrong with both the procedures and you can even discuss with your friends and family to choose the right option suitable for you.
